WASHINGTON D.C. — Most people might assume that they’re safe from being recorded in the privacy of their own home.
This is what Joe Franklin thought before his family was victim to online sexual extortion.
“Never in my worst nightmare would I ever have thought my daughter and wife’s nude photos would be leaked for the world to see”
“I work hard to provide a good home for my family. I’ve always protected them in any way that I knew how but when a hacker took over our webcams my whole life was flung into chaos and heartbreak.
It all started when I noticed the computers were acting slow and sluggish. I didn’t think much of it because my family only uses the computer for surfing the internet.
Then I received an email from an address I had never seen before with a photo of my daughter in the bathroom, along with a message that read:
“If you don’t send 20 bitcoins to the following address:
I will be releasing this photos along with photos of your wife to your employer and your wife’s employer.
Needless to say I had never even heard of a freakin’ bitcoin. After looking it up I found out Bitcoins is an untraceable currency used by hackers. He was extorting me for $15,000!
“Bitcoins are an untraceable currency used by hackers. He was extorting me for $15,000!”
I immediately called law enforcement but they said the best they could do was file a complaint and they would call me if they “had any leads.”
I felt unable to be able to protect my wife and daughter when they needed me the most it was one of worst feelings I have ever felt .
I ended up re-financing my home to be able to pay off this hacker because I realized that there was nothing that law enforcement could do to protect my family.
That’s when I started looking heavily into computer security for my family. I decided that I was never going to leave my family vulnerable again to this type of online sexual extortion.
